    Analyzing the Flow of Information from Initial Publishing to Wikipedia

    This thesis covers my efforts at researching the factors that lead to a research paper being cited by Wikipedia. Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites on the internet for quickly learning about a specific topic. It achieved this by being able to back up its claims with cited sources, many of which are research papers. I wanted to see exactly how those papers were found by Wikipedia’s editors when they write the articles. To do this, I gathered thousands of computer science research papers from arXiv.org, as well as a selection of papers that were cited by Wikipedia, so that I could examine those papers and see what made them visible and attractive to the Wikipedia editors. After I gathered the information on how and when these papers are cited, I ran a series of tests on them to learn as much as I could about what causes a paper to be cited by Wikipedia. I discovered that papers that are cited by Wikipedia tend to be more popular than papers which are not cited by Wikipedia even before they are cited but getting cited by Wikipedia can result in a boost in popularity. Wikipedia editors also tend to choose papers that either showcase a creation of the author(s) or give a general overview on a topic. I also discovered one paper that was likely added to Wikipedia by the author in an attempt at increased visibility

    A USB3.0 FPGA Event-based Filtering and Tracking Framework for Dynamic Vision Sensors

    Dynamic vision sensors (DVS) are frame-free sensors with an asynchronous variable-rate output that is ideal for hard real-time dynamic vision applications under power and latency constraints. Post-processing of the digital sensor output can reduce sensor noise, extract low level features, and track objects using simple algorithms that have previously been implemented in software. In this paper we present an FPGA-based framework for event-based processing that allows uncorrelated-event noise removal and real-time tracking of multiple objects, with dynamic capabilities to adapt itself to fast or slow and large or small objects. This framework uses a new hardware platform based on a Lattice FPGA which filters the sensor output and which then transmits the results through a super-speed Cypress FX3 USB microcontroller interface to a host computer. The packets of events and timestamps are transmitted to the host computer at rates of 10 Mega events per second. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate a low latency of 10us for tracking and computing the center of mass of a detected object.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2012-37868-C04-0

    Companion modelling for exploring natural resource management strategies in Palawanm, The Philippines

    This paper reports experiences and lessons of a continuing study on the use of a contemporary analytical tool, Multi-agent Systems (MAS), to study the dynamics and complex interactions among stakeholders in the management of common renewable resources. In the MAS model, a renewable resource management system is represented with different autonomous entities, called agents, that are able to act, interact with other agents, and be affected by objects in the environment. In this study, the MAS model is developed using the Companion Modelling (ComMod) approach, a collaborative development of a MAS model between the stakeholders and researchers which places primary importance on the quality of process to ensure that the tools developed are acceptable and used with confidence. This approach involves the development and application of computer simulations and role-playing games (RPGs) to validate the MAS model as well as learn from it. Inferences are drawn from the learning and negotiation processes that the stakeholders and researchers undergo in the collaborative development of the MAS model and the techniques used to realize this model, i.e. computer simulation and RPG, as well as the development of a unified resource management plan for three villages. For the community, having acknowledged the RPG as a reliable representation of their reality, they see these tools as vehicles to reach the appropriate stakeholders and communicate their concerns about their livelihoods and resources. For local government agencies and non-government organizations, these tools serve as eye-openers about the dire livelihood conditions of the community. Furthermore, local governments see the RPG and computer simulation as effective techniques to inform and educate people about their plans or programs for the management of resources and livelihood for the community. The stakeholders also agree that these tools are useful in coming together and discussing issues pertaining to the management of their natural resources and livelihood activities. Given the benefits that could be derived from ComMod and MAS modelling in NRM, these techniques display a great potential in plantation management for increasing the financial returns

    ‘Walking ... just walking’: how children and young people’s everyday pedestrian practices matter

    In this paper we consider the importance of ‘walking… just walking’ for many children and young people’s everyday lives. We will show how, in our research with 175 9-16-year-olds living in new urban developments in south-east England, some particular (daily, taken-for-granted, ostensibly aimless) forms of walking were central to the lives, experiences and friendships of most children and young people. The main body of the paper highlights key characteristics of these walking practices, and their constitutive role in these children and young people’s social and cultural geography. Over the course of the paper we will argue that ‘everyday pedestrian practices’ (after Middleton 2010, 2011) like these require us to think critically about two bodies of geographical and social scientific research. On one hand, we will argue that the large body of research on children’s spatial range and independent mobility could be conceptually enlivened and extended to acknowledge bodily, social, sociotechnical and habitual practices. On the other hand, we will suggest that the empirical details of such practices should prompt critical reflection upon the wonderfully rich, multidisciplinary vein of conceptualisation latterly termed ‘new walking studies’ (Lorimer 2011). Indeed, in conclusion we shall argue that the theoretical vivacity of walking studies, and the concerns of more applied empirical approaches such as work on children’s independent mobility, could productively be interrelated. In so doing we open out a wider challenge to social and cultural geographers, to expedite this kind of interrelation in other research contexts

    Parallel surrogate-assisted global optimization with expensive functions – a survey

    Surrogate assisted global optimization is gaining popularity. Similarly, modern advances in computing power increasingly rely on parallelization rather than faster processors. This paper examines some of the methods used to take advantage of parallelization in surrogate based global optimization. A key issue focused on in this review is how different algorithms balance exploration and exploitation. Most of the papers surveyed are adaptive samplers that employ Gaussian Process or Kriging surrogates. These allow sophisticated approaches for balancing exploration and exploitation and even allow to develop algorithms with calculable rate of convergence as function of the number of parallel processors. In addition to optimization based on adaptive sampling, surrogate assisted parallel evolutionary algorithms are also surveyed. Beyond a review of the present state of the art, the paper also argues that methods that provide easy parallelization, like multiple parallel runs, or methods that rely on population of designs for diversity deserve more attention.United States.     Intracardiac Metastatic Sarcoma

    Even though intracardiac sarcoma metastases are rare, they have been previously reported in the literature. We report the case of a 60-year-old man who had a synovial sarcoma with metastasis in the right ventricle. These findings were associated with the presence of a new cardiac murmur and severe thrombocytopenia. The treatment with systemic chemotherapy resulted in a normalization of the patient's hematologic profile and in a reduction of the intracardiac mass. The patient subsequently underwent intracardiac tumor resection

    A Measurement of Water Vapour amid a Largely Quiescent Environment on Europa

    Previous investigations proved the existence of local density enhancements in Europas atmosphere, advancing the idea of a possible origination from water plumes. These measurement strategies, however, were sensitive either to total absorption or atomic emissions, which limited the ability to assess the water content. Here we present direct searches for water vapour on Europa spanning dates from February 2016 to May 2017 with the Keck Observatory. Our global survey at infrared wavelengths resulted in non-detections on 16 out of 17 dates, with upper limits below the water abundances inferred from previous estimates. On one date (26 April 2016) we measured 2,095 658 tonnes of water vapour at Europas leading hemisphere. We suggest that the outgassing ls than previously estimated, with only rare localized events of stronger activity
